Phillies need Arrieta to have a winning outing today in Miami

Bullpen woes have again surfaced for the Phils - Adam Morgan with his 3rd loss of the year, also his 3rd blown save

Alright, the jubilence of the Phillies victory over the Mets in 4 straight games have left us, familiar cries of losing have replaced this from talk radio and fans alike who expect the Phillies to be able to handle a team like the Miami Marlins. Now, there is two losses in a row by the Phils, this doesn't happen to 'good' teams.

The Marlins have found a little magic of their own against the Phillies, yesterday coming back from a 7-1 deficit to beat the Phillies in an unlikely comeback. Had the Phillies won, there would be a little bit of solace there, but they didn't and the pundits and detractors came back at the Phillies with a fierce call. The team just doesn't have the right ingredients, and that is well known from the bullpen, we've known about the bullpen and it's problems. This didn't go away folks.

Maybe Bryce Harper can shave his beard to change his play on the field? He's batting .243 on the season with 14 HR on the year

Jake Arrieta needs to go out and pitch like Eflin did last night, and the Phils have to close out the Marlins with a win today or we'll be back to a bad point in the season as the Braves are the next opponent for the Phillies coming up on Monday.

Hunter looks almost completely out of shape on the mound, he's not looking very MLB in his return to the mound

What more can we say? The Phils offense did it's job yesterday, then the bullpen let the team down, there was no big investment in the pen. Tommy Hunter was a waste of money, the guy doesn't even really look Major League ready, was he on a steady diet of cheesesteaks and milkshakes the whole time he was on the DL? Another 'tool' of the bullpen is Pat Neshek, he's only pitched in 18 innings so far this year.. amazing, and he's given up 11 runs - 10 of those being Earned Runs. He's getting paid big money, which as we know has been a waste of money by the Phils.

Big game for the Phils today, they need a win badly.

Phillies swept Mets with getting back to winning baseball

Fundamentals have returned to the Phillies, the skill to properly execute basic baseball moves have improved

Isn't this game so hard to figure out? The Phillies were on a 7-game losing streak, they couldn't buy a win practically- then the NY Mets came into town and they sweep them in 4 straight games. It took a few comebacks to do it, but that's how a team gets out of a slump and returns to the winning side.

The Phillies needed this in the worst way, if they are going to have a really positive season, they need to keep winning, and this was a very good start. It's the Florida Marlins next up for this team down in Miami, and if they can continue to win that would be great.

Everything is better when you win, what a last 4-games the Phillies have had

It's amazing the way a losing streak can affect fans, a lot of fans were jumping ship in the latter stages of the slump. Many took to social media and they had seen enough. Of course things change with the winning streak now, maybe many of them will be back on board with the team.

Was it improved team play, a sprinkle of luck, bamboo ?  We'll never know that answer but this is what keeps us intrigued by this game. A combination of luck, skill and bamboo have brought some comic relief to the scene at least.

Phillies solid with 2nd win straight, superstition surrounds bamboo

Who would have thought we would have heard so much about the Phillies baseball team and bamboo in the same breath of air? Well, bamboo fever is in full swing now with the recent pickup of Brad Miller who brought some bamboo into the clubhouse a few days ago to break the spell of Phillies losing.

Maybe it had nothing to do with the bamboo but the Phillies have now won 2 games in a row, and had to battle back last night to get that 2nd victory. So the bamboo myth is now firmly in place. Baseball is a sport that is tied with certain good luck and bad luck connotations so for now, the bamboo is seen as incredibly good by the superstitious among us.

Maikel Franco has hit another HR on the season to help the Phils last night

There was also a curveball machine brought out by manager, Gabe Kapler, who himself has transformed as he's gotten thrown out of his second ballgame last night, he looks like he's getting more explosive as the season wears on. Maikel Franco hit another HR last night, he's been back on the plus side as well.

Hoskins hits a HR last night for the Phils

We're still waiting for the combination of Hoskins and Harper to get hot at the same time, Harper was 0-3 last night, and Hoskins was 1-3 (he did have an RBI though with the solo HR). Slowly though we've seen a little glimpse of the 'better' Phillies playing, and of course everything always seems better when you're winning.

The Phils and the Mets gather again tonight at 7:05 PM and then wrap up this 4-game series at 1:05 PM on Thursday. Can the luck of the bamboo continue?

The anatomy of a losing streak

Gabe Kapler loses his temper yesterday and gets tossed out of the game for the first time ever

When things don't go right in baseball, it can seem like nothing is going right. That is the state of the Phillies right now. In the mire of a 6-game losing streak, two to the Miami Marlins at home most recently. You wonder what will happen to make this all change.

When pitching doesn't do well, the bats can't overcome what happens, and when the bats go silent it's not easy to overcome that. So what is wrong with this Phillies team?

Back to back with Bryce Harper yesterday

Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins went back-to-back yesterday for the first time of the season. Phillies fans have been waiting to see this, and a couple months into the season plus, it finally happened yesterday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phils have lost 6 games in a row. It's been hard to take for fans that have expected a lot more than the have been doing lately. What is the cause for all of this?

Let's look at some positives: JT Realmuto as of yesterday is the first Phillies catcher with 23 caught stealings before July since 2012 when Carlos Ruiz had 24. Scott Kingery brought his .650 slugging percentage into yesterday's game, he sits 6th on the top 10 just behind Christian Yelich who leads the MLB, then Bellinger, Blackmon, Trout, and Gallo. That's what kind of good hitting Kingery has been doing lately.

The Phillies can just get back on the field today and get a much needed win and build from there. A loss will only deepen the problem with this team. We need a win, and we need it bad.
