Phils to face tougher opponent in Cardinals

The always dangerous Yadier Molina is still catching for the Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals use to be a very good ball club for years, it seems after the Albert Pujols era with them, the club steadily declined over the last several years. The last time the St. Louis Cardinals made the playoffs was 2015, when they bowed out in the LDS vs. the Chicago Cubs.  That 2015 series loss ended a five year straight run for the Cardinals with them in the playoffs, they won the World Series in 2011 in 7 games vs. the Texas Rangers and lost in the 2103 World Series to the The Boston Red Sox 4-2. Fans are still with this team, in fact, the Cards are in 2nd place of all 15 MLB NL teams in home attendance. 2019 has this team much better in a position to win with Paul Goldschmidt on the team and couple of other lessor known names, but they are players that are getting the job done on the diamond.

DeJong isn't a household name yet amongst the casual baseball fan

The Cards are in first place in the NL Central, this series will be an early showdown of Division first place teams. The Phillies are in first with several needed wins over the last few games. The Cardinals secret weapon is a guy named Paul DeJong, you probably haven't heard his name too much in the circles of playing baseball. DeJong is the spark plug of this Cardinals team so far this year, he has a 2.2 WAR for the Cards so far.

Vince was stellar on the road the last road start vs the New York Mets

So the Phillies will have a test of sorts with this series which is three games starting tonight at 8:05 PM with Vince Velasquez taking on Miles Mikolas for the Cards. The Cards just are coming off of a loss in Chicago last night on Sunday Night Baseball, and the game tonight will be broadcast on ESPN as well. The Cards were swept in Chicago, so they will be trying their best to do well in front of their home town fans are break their losing streak.

The Phillies need to show a lot of strength in this series, they need to come out and get the job done on the field as they have at home the last several games. The bullpen is still very unsteady for this team, something needs to be done really soon to fix this, if the Phils management can do this simple task, this team could be poised for a very successful 2019 remaining.

This is the roster of players the Cards have for the 2019 season:
