Hopefully the Phillies draft someone like Kris Bryant when Mickey Moniak makes it to the big leagues
The Phillies didn't choose the local product to South Jersey, Jason Groome. Groome, had been rumored to be the first pick in this year's draft. The Phils went with an outfielder from La Costa Canyon, California by the name of Mickey Moniak.
Moniak has said that he will attend UCLA, but at this point, it seems like he may be putting that aside to play professional baseball. Moniak is an outfielder with some power. He's almost like the Phillies had drafted first back in 1998 and chose Pat Burrell, who was also an outfielder with power.
Mickey was the Gatorade California Player of the Year for his high school team.
That was great news for the Phillies, they picked up a guy who might be able to add some needed offense to this team, but only a couple years from now.
The Phillies had the number 1 pick in the draft this year. They passed on Jason Groome, from Barnegat, NJ. Groome didn't get picked until #12 last night by the Boston Red Sox.
During the MLB Network broadcast, the announcers launched into a long diatribe into why Jason Groome didn't get picked up in the top 10 picks, they really went out of their way to portray this this kid as a 'problem child'. It went on and on for many minutes of negative talk about a kid that just is finishing up high school and hasn't done too much harm to anybody. Why then would a nationally broadcast show make a point of beating up on a young player like that?
If you're Jason Groome, one of the first things you probably want to explore is to perhaps have an attorney review that broadcast and see if these announcers actually slandered his name. The comments they were making were really that harsh. In this day and age of trial by television, you shouldn't be a kid that just pitched a great high school career and get your name and character assassinated like they did on MLB Network last night.
