Has Ryan completely lost his baseball skills? His .150 BA is simply inexcusable for a player of his caliber
This is the time in the baseball season when you don't want to go on extended losing streaks (you kind of never do, but losing streaks are a part of the season) but that is exactly what the Phillies have done now in the past three weeks of the 2016 season.
The Phils are at 29-33 and 9.0 games back now in 4th place in the NL East. It seemed at a time, they were going to be challenging New York for the second place spot just about a month ago. Now, the wins are very scarce.
Does this Phillies team have a leader? That's something I've been asking for some time now. The answer is probably not, every night there is a different lineup as Pete Mackanin seems like he's trying to play magician with getting the right combination on the field.
Luckily the Phils haven't slipped further being that they haven't been scoring many runs, and now their starting pitching took a hit with Vincent Velasquez on the DL and Adam Morgan not really pitching all too well. Morgan is 1-5 on the year with a lofty 6.70 ERA before his start later today in Washington against one of the best teams in baseball.
Ryan Howard has been sitting out regularly now that Pete Mackanin prefers to have a look at Tommy Joseph's offensive skills. Ryan has only started in 10 games now since May 14th Howard can't really blame Mackanin, his batting average is at .150, but he does have 9 HR and that is something that the Phillies need more of. This team is lacking in power so badly, the offense is near or at the bottom of all the offensive batting catagories of all 30 teams in the MLB.
It's unfortunate but this team just doesn't not have the ingredients to make it a really good team. No amount of juggling or switching the lineup on a nightly basis will compensate for this. It's a work in progress, but this team still has a long way to go before it can obtain a winning identity.
The Phils wrap up the series in DC later today, the team had been playing the Nationals pretty tough prior to the start of this series. The Phils had been enjoying a 4-2 advantage in the season series against the Nats but that has been evened up with the Phils two losses so far in this series.
