Rollins makes an incredible slide last night to help the Phillies win, Frandsen calls it!
Philadelphia- The Phillies are an incredible 21.5 GB from the Atlanta Braves now even with a comeback win last night. The season now is down to less than a month remaining and the Phils are still floundering with a 63-75 record. For the fans of the Phillies, we'll take just about any good news and ride with it for all it's worth. Last night's game is one that a lot of us will savor.
The Nationals came into this game last night practically owning the Phillies this season, the Nats took 4 of the last 5 games between the two teams and were the winners of the last 3 games in a row that the two teams have played.
The Phillies must not have read those stats though as it was shades of the 'old' Phillies teams from '07 through 2010 last night, a lot of hustle and keeping this game close enough to make a comeback win, along with a few key hits.
Cole Hamels and Stephen Strasburg did what they do best last night, they had a tremendous pitcher's duel going on into the late innings, and the Phillies bullpen managed to keep this game under control enough to give the Phillies a chance to win this game.
Strasburg looked like he was cruising, he had 10 strikeouts on the night. Consider this insane stat, Strasburg went into last night's game with a record of 2-0 vs the Phillies and an .053 ERA against them as well this season.
Cole Hamels struck out 8 Nationals batters before we saw the Phillies get to Nationals reliever, Tyler Clippard. Key hits by Jimmy Rollins, and Carlos Ruiz were the difference in the 3-2 victory, oh yes, and Jonathan Papelbon's closing the door on the Nats in the 9th.
Jimmy Rollins showed a side of him last night that we haven't seen in a long time. He played his heart out on the field and was a big reason that the Phillies won this game last night. He had a key long double to right field that almost made it over the wall, and he scored on perhaps one of the best slides that I've ever seen Jimmy Rollins make.
Game 2 of the Phils vs. Nats tonight, Gio Gonzalez vs Ethan Martin at 7:05 PM
