The Nats player Bryce Harper sent a 'Play me or trade me' text to Davey Johnson in recent days - ramping up some controversy in the Nationals as Gio rolls on against the Phils last night
Last night's game was a well touted one. You had the Phillies ace, Cliff Lee and the Washington Nats ace, Gio Gonzalez matched up for a very humid night of baseball in Philadelphia.
Some sideline drama exists with the Nationals, with Bryce Harper wanting to play so much that he demanded on a text to Davey Johnson that he either plays him or trade him. Jayson Werth has played extremely well against his old team, and he continued that last night. That's what we always loved about Werth, he is a gamer and goes out there and proves it.
Cliff Lee was seeking his 11th win for the Phils this year, and Gio Gonzalez has looking for his 7th win. Gonzalez is coming off a story book year last year when he won 21 games and lost only 6 for the Nationals last year, he finished 3rd in voting for the 2012 Cy Young award. He showed the Phillies that side of him last night as the Phils could only end up scoring 1 run on a Darin Ruf home run.
Gonzalez was drafted right out of the amateur draft at 22 years old in 2004 and he made it straight into the big leagues that year. His three losses this year came against tough matches against Atlanta twice and the Baltimore Orioles.
This is the 6th time that Gio has faced the Phillies, and he's got an amazing 4 wins against them in a short amount of time, so I doubt the Phillies like to face him all that much. The Nats have been 5-1 with Gio on the mound lifetime against the Phils.
Here's Gio's lifetime starts against the Phillies:
|1||2013-07-10||WSN||PHI||W 5-1||GS-7 ,W||7.0||6||1||1.29|
|3||2012-09-27||WSN||PHI||W 7-3||GS-6 ,W||6.0||6||3||4.50|
|4||2012-08-25||WSN||PHI||L 2-4||GS-6 ,L||6.0||5||3||4.50|
|5||2012-05-21||WSN||PHI||W 2-1||GS-6 ,W||6.0||3||0||0.00|
|6||2012-05-05||WSN||PHI||W 7-1||GS-7 ,W||7.0||4||1||1.29|
Game 4 of the series with the Nats continues tonight at 7:05 PM.
Kyle Kendrick takes the mound vs Jordan Zimmermann.
For the Phillies, they need to keep winning ballgames, they can't afford another slip to losing a few games in a row now, they've been playing better, but have to keep sustaining that.
We've seen some great baseball in this series, the match up with the Nationals has become more of a rivalry.
