Phils to draft at 40th pick in MLB Draft 2012

The Phillies will be making the 40th pick in this year's 2012 MLB Draft, for first-year players this year. The pick comes as compensation for Ryan Madson's signing with the Cincinnati Reds. The Phils pick again at #54 again as compensation for Raul Ibanez signing with the Yankees.

Also the Phils get to pick at #77 in the second round for further compensation for Ryan Madson signing with the Reds. So the Phillies will be selecting a few players in close proximity of one another.

How important is it to draft high? Well in 2009 First-Year Player Draft , the Washington Nationals had the first pick in the draft that year, and they selected Stephen Strasburg. In 2010, the Nationals had the top pick again and selected Bryce Harper.

Of course in order for your team to get the top draft picks, you generally have had to have a horrible season the year before, so the Phillies won't be gettting any top 10 picks anytime soon.

MLB Draft 2012 June 4-6, top rounds are on national tv, here is the order:

DRAFT ORDER (1st Round): HOU * MIN * SEA * BAL * KC * CHI * SD * PIT * MIA * COL * OAK * NYM * CWS * CIN * CLE * WAS * TOR * LAD * STL * SF * ATL * TOR * STL * BOS * TB * ARI * DET * MIL * TEX * NYY * BOS

The Phils lost in San Francisco last night by a score of  4-2, it takes their season record now to 5-6 on the season. It's Cliff Lee vs Matt Cain tonight at 10:05 PM in San Francisco. Both the Phillies and the Giants own 5-6 records as we see both play the 12 game of the season tonight.
