Phillies roster whittling way towards 25

The players who didn’t make the Opening Day roster are starting to find their way to the exits and the Phillies are now carving down that Spring Training roster down towards the more manageable 25-man Opening Day roster.

Dontrelle ‘D-Train’ Willis was let go last week, after a somewhat less than promising appearance in Spring Training. Willis did go 1-6 for the Reds last year, and there still may be a spot for him somewhere in the MLB, but it won’t be for the Phillies. What a stellar drop for Dontrelle who was the 2003 National League Rookie of the Year.

Meanwhile, the Phillies injured infield is in question with Placido Polanco having an injury to his ring finger. Late update from Bob Brookover from the Philly Inquirer on Polanco from twitter: “@brookob X-rays negative on Polanco's sprained ring finger. He will miss a couple days.”

The Phillies infield is officially banged up now with Chase Utley, and his mysterious injury, that no one is really talking about, and Ryan Howard’s torn achilles that is healing slowly.

Could the Phillies be in trouble for the first couple months of the season?

Quote of the day.. from Matt Gelb of Philadelphia Inquirer on twitter:

@magelb  Phillies infield on this Sunday: Mayberry, Martinez, Rollins, Wigginton.

Here’s the Phillies projected 25-man roster from MLB Depthcharts
