Anytime a player can’t get on the field for Spring Training, there is concern. The Phillies have been quietly trying to put a band-aid on the issue concerning why Chase Utley hasn’t been on the field since the day camp started.
The other day, Phillies GM, Ruben Amaro Jr. let the cat out of the bag.
Amaro finally told all about Utley, probably bothered by the constant questioning he was receiving about it. “The guy’s got bad knees,” is what Amaro said about Utley.
How bad is bad? When pressing on with his comments, Amaro went on to say to the effect, it’s more than just his right knee, it’s also the left knee that is bothering Utley.
Maybe Utley would have improved with surgery but according to many reports, he has resisted any such advice so far. Perhaps his recent trip to see a specialist is more about finding a happy medium for him and the Phillies who are being patient with him, but have Freddie Galvis in the wings and have a team that is starting up in just a couple of weeks.
Read on Utley’s condition with the AP’s Rob Maaddi’s report that Utley is doubtful for Opening Day, and reading between the lines of this report, you have to wonder if this is a career type of threatening injury as well.
