Offense sparks Game 1 win for Phils in NLDS

Howard talks about his clutch home run after the game

The start of game 1 of the NLDS didn’t look too good for the Phillies. Right out of the gate, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the first inning and posted 3 runs courtesy of a Lance Berkman HR that went off of the second deck advertising billboard in right field. That was about all of the scoring in much of this game until the Phillies offense awoke to counter the Cards in the 6th inning.

It was the bottom of the sixth inning with the score of 3-1 in favor of the Cardinals, it was a 3-2 count to Ryan Howard and Ryan put a long home run into the stands off of the AT&T billboard in right field to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead at that point. Howard’s home run reenergized the fans in Philly who were on egg shells after the early lead by the Cardinals. Raul Ibanez followed in the same inning with a two run HR in the same inning to give the Phils a 6-3 lead.

Berkman is adding Halladay to his book in the last two weeks

Roy Halladay’s line was impressive only giving up 3 hits in the game, one of them was the 3 run HR, he struck out 8 and walked only 1. Lance Berkman’s home run was the second HR that he has hit off of Halladay this season, the first one coming in a game on September 19th. Halladay only gave up 10 HR’s all season long in 2011. In 2010, he gave up 24 HR’s so that is a big improvement for Roy who won 19 games this year.

One big swing

“One big swing put them ahead, and one big swing for us gave it back to us, and we were able to add on from there,” is what Roy Halladay had to say about the Phillies rally to take the lead in the game last night at the postgame press conference. Halladay was mad after he gave up the home run to Lance Berkman according to Charile Manuel. Halladay confirmed that he was, “I was upset, but the biggest thing you try to think about is ‘I can’t get it back’…, you have your moment of frustation and you have to move on...”

The Phillies offense had to adjust to Kyle Lohse during the game. Lohse had retired the Phillies in order for the first three innings. Lohse kept the ball low for the first few innings but then elevated the ball around the 4th inning and the Phillies started to take advantage of that.

Howard’s battle with Lohse paid off for ryan

Ryan Howard’s HR off of Lohse was a good battle, Ryan worked the count to 3-2 before hitting the long home run. Howard was asked about last year’s struggle in the playoffs for him after the game. “For me it was a fresh start, trying to do what I could to help my team…,” is what Howard said in response. Ryan basically has left last year alone saying, “I left last year in the past, and this is a completely new year, you can’t bring what happened last year into this year...”

Boxscore Bonanza from Game 1:

Jimmy Rollins: 2-4 with 3 runs scored

Chase Utley: 3-5 with 3 runs scored

Shane Victorinio: 3-4 with 2 RBI
