Pence and Mayberry combine for Phillies victory

We saw something that is not often seen in the Phillies dugout, smiling faces, as Hunter Pence and John Mayberry went back to back to get a great start off to the ballgame in San Francisco. The home runs came in the 2nd inning and from then on, it was basically a long pitcher's duel. The Phils added 1 more run in the 9th to win the first game of the series in San Francisco.

The Phils road record improved to 31-21 as the team also notched thier 72nd victory on the year. The win streak for the Phillies is at 7 games in a row. The only other teams with a better road record so far is the Boston Red Sox with a 33-21 record and the New York Yankees with a 31-20 record on the road.

The Atlanta Braves seemed like they were going to be close in the standings to the Phillies but now have faded to 8.5 games back in the NL East. The Mets have pulled to an even .500 and 16.5 games back, and the Marlins are a game under .500 at 55-56 and 17 games out. The Braves probably wonder how they can do much better as their record would have them in first place if they were in the Central or West Division.
