The San Francisco Giants are a scrappy ballclub who have a lot of players that aren't household names. Take Cody Ross for example, he has not been looked at as a sought after free agent, but the Giants saw a fiery player in him and picked him up in August for a possible playoff run. Ross played in a huge part in the Giants 4-3 victory last night in Philadelphia in Game 1 of the NLCS.
The Phillies offense didn't rise to the occasion last night. The team looked much like they did in the Division Series. When there were scoring opportunities, the bats just couldn't get the job done. Here is a run down of the box score from last night:
| Batting | AB | R | H | RBI | BB | SO | BA | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shane Victorino CF | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | .167 | GDP |
| Placido Polanco 3B | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .154 | 2B |
| Chase Utley 2B | 3 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | .286 | |
| Ryan Howard 1B | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 3 | .267 | 2B |
| Jayson Werth RF | 3 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | .267 | HR |
| Jimmy Rollins SS | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | .067 | |
| Raul Ibanez LF | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | .200 | |
| Carlos Ruiz C | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | .273 | HR,HBP |
| Wilson Valdez PR | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .333 | |
| Roy Halladay P | 2 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | .400 | |
| Domonic Brown PH | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .000 | |
| Ryan Madson P | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | ||
| Brad Lidge P | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | ||
| Ross Gload PH | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | .000 | |
| Team Totals | 33 | 3 | 7 | 3 | 3 | 13 | .212 |
The problem we see with the boxscore is a lot of zeros in the hits column. The Phillies did scatter 7 hits in the ballgame of course with Chooch's HR and Werth's HR in the mix.
Jimmy Rollins was 0-4, Victorino was 0-5 and Ryan Howard had 3 strikeouts on the night for the Phillies. These three players will have to do much better for the Phils tonight in Game 2 of the NLCS.
We had a live blog going last night here at FightinPhillies, and we'll do it again for Game 2 tonight.
