It's hard to believe that the Phillies were last in first place in the NL East on May 30th, prior to the win last night and Braves loss that propelled the Phillies back into first place. Charlie Manuel said it best after the game in reference to being in first, "It's always good to be first, it's the only way to live."
Yes, it's better to be in first. The Phillies have a lot of work to do to stay there though as after today's game with the Marlins, the team heads back out onto the road after the off-day on Thursday. The Phils travel to New York and then to Florida to face these very same Marlins in Miami.
The scoreboard watching is over for now, as long as the Phillies continue to win. The Atlanta Braves have made a serious stumble here in September. The Braves got shutout 5-0 by Pittsburgh yesterday and it doesn't feel any worse than that to be beat by these teams that you would think would be an easy win against. The Braves head home after tonight's game in Pittsburgh and then face the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, and then the Nationals come to Atlanta for a three game series.
Ryan Howard looks like he is getting back up to speed after his sluggish start coming off of the DL. He homered and doubled last night. Howard also scored three runs on the night. Polanco has come through again for the Phillies in spots where last year's Pedro Feliz might not have for the Phillies.
The win was number 80 for the Phillies on the season, tonight they will look to make it 81 games and hold onto first place. Cole Hamels takes the mound for the Phils tonight.
