Roy Halladay is flirting with something that's last been done in a Phillies uniform in 1982. The elusive 20-game winner by a Phillies pitcher is about to be broken this year with Roy Halladay, who as this article is written, is on the doorstep of accomplishing this feat in 2010.
The last Phil's pitcher to win 20 or more games was Steve Carlton, who won the Cy Young Award with the Phillies in 1982, he posted a 23-11 record. Carlton was the only 20 game winner in baseball that year, and it propelled him to his 4th Cy Young Award, something that no one had accomplished up to that point. Carlton is arguably one of the best pitchers ever. His Phillies career lasted from 1972-1986, Carlton then stayed another two years in baseball to the age of 43. His overall record as a Phillies pitcher is 241-161, amassing over 3000 strikeouts as a Phillies pitcher alone.
Halladay has one Cy Young Award to his credit, awarded in 2003. In that year he was also named as Pitcher of The Year by Sporting News, and ranked as the best player in baseball by the Elias Sports Bureau. He has won 20 games or more twice as a Toronto Blue Jay. In 2003, Halladay won 22 games and in 2008, he won 20 for the Blue Jays.
Over it's long history as a team, the Phillies have quite a long list of 20 game winners, most winners who have won 20 or more occurred a long time ago. The first 20 game winner for the Phillies team was in 1901 when Red Donahue turned in a 21-13 record. Grover Alexander won an incredible 33 games for the Phils back in 1916, it's a record that will most likely never be broken. In the modern era since 1970, the Phillies pitcher with the most wins in a season is Steve Carlton with 27 wins in 1972, he went 27-10.
