Dobbs comes back to help the Phillies win in this one
Talk about a turn of events. Greg Dobbs just two weeks ago was put on waivers for any team who wanted him by the team he helped to victory tonight at Citizens Bank Park. Greg Dobbs, who has been getting better and better with each game he is playing, hit a towering two run home run in South Philly tonight.
The Phillies lost faith in the bench player Dobbs after he had a horrendous first half of the season with the Phillies coming off of the bench. Dobbs does have potential though, he always displayed this in a Phillies uniform, but the decision was made to cut him loose or send him down to the minors.
Dobbs doesn’t have anyone to blame in his Phillies career demise, except possibly not playing enough. His BA dipped to a season low of .125 on vs. Atlanta on May 31st this season and the Phillies had almost had enough of him. Up to tonight, Dobbs only started in 14 games for the Phillies and any time he was a pinch hitter, he came off the bench ice cold and just couldn’t produce.
Dobbs has come through when it mattered for the Phillies in the playoffs and World Series. In 21 AB, he has 7 H or a .333 BA in six postseason series that he has batted in. This includes the World Series where he went 2-4 in 2008. His hits on the playoffs and World Series though didn’t lead to any RBI’s and just 2 R in the 21 AB’s.
This was being called a ‘must win’ for the Phillies to keep them from free falling worse into the NL East. They were 5 GB at the start of the night, and now with the win, they are 4 GB. They really need to keep this going also, they need to win as many games as they can leading up to next week’s All Star Game.
It’s going to be hot in Philly on Tuesday, over 100 degrees is possible. The Phils need to win again, and it’s going to be Cole “Hollywood” Hamels pitching for the Phillies.
