'Superman' Chase Utley is unfamiliar to the DL

Photo from fOTOGLIF

It wasn't on this play that Chase was hurt, but a slide into second that injured his thumb

Chase Utley will be on the DL for the first time in a very long while. He's played through pain before, but in Game 1 against the Cincinnati Reds, Chase was sliding into second base and injured his thumb. He'll be out for at least 15 days and this will probably force him to miss the All Star Game in Anaheim, CA which is just two weeks away.
Placido Polanco is also on the DL at the same time, and it's going to be a tough few weeks for the Phils unless some of the replacement Phillies kick in some offense to make up for it. Last night, it was a three run home run by 2nd baseman Wilson Valdez to help the Phillies along with a home run from Brian Schneider. Those two hits paced the Phillies night on offense. It was only Wilson Valdez's 3rd HR on the year, and the 2nd for Schneider.

The last time Utley spent a time on the DL was 2007, after he was hit in the hand from a John Lannan pitch vs. the Nationals.

Today will tell more clearly how long Utley will be on the DL, when more testing is done.

Rolen loves to play against the Phillies

He was drafted by the Phillies in 1993, and he reached the majors in 1996, he even played for the Phillies for six years. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1997. Despite his early success in the league for the Phillies, Scott Rolen seems to take delight to beat the team that gave him his start in the MLB.

Rolen in his defense asked to be traded from the Phillies after years of bad teams that the Phillies fielded, and he didn't think management was committed to putting a winning team on the field. In the years he played for the Phillies ('96-'02), the best record the Phillies had those years was a 2nd place finish in 2001.

Last night, Rolen, who is playing now for the Reds, hit a home run and had three RBI's for the Reds who went on to beat the Phillies 7-3. This isn't the first time that Rolen has played a big part in beating the Phillies. He's done it before as a Cardinal, and Blue Jay.

The Phillies fans still remember Rolen, they will boo him at every opportunity there is at Citizen's Bank Park. You don't want to play for the Phillies? You'll have to face the wrath of the fans for rest of your career.

Rolen is 35 now, and it's hard to believe he is now in the twilight of his baseball career, it all went by too fast. Not for the Phillies though, Scott still goes out of his way to make it tough for his old team.

Phillies take on Reds in Cinncy

The Phillies have travelled to the Midwest to take on the hot Cincinnati Reds, who occupy first place in the NL Central. Could this series be a preview of the October playoffs?

Johnny Cueto gets the ball for the Reds in Game 1 of the three game series vs. Kyle Kendrick for the Phillies. Kendrick is 4-2 with a 4.71 ERA so far on the season. Cueto is 7-2 with a 3.97 ERA for the Reds.

The Reds hold a slim 1/2 game lead in the NL Central over the St. Louis Cardinals.
