Phils follow with another thriller and into NLCS

The slim lead that the Phillies held much of Game 4 was not enough to win the ballgame last night in Colorado. You knew a 1-0 lead wouldn’t hold, and you knew a 2-1 lead by the Phillies probably wouldn’t be the final score either. Cliff Lee pitched another lights out game for the Phillies on this night, he painted corners left and right and kept the ball low in the strike zone. Lee didn’t get the win last night, but he kept the Phillies in the game and Ryan Madson got the blown save but ended up with the win as the Phillies stormed back to erase the deficit and come up with a thrilling win in Denver in the 9th inning.

The Phils were down 4-2 heading into their top of the 9th inning and the Phils started the comeback. Greg Dobbs led off with a strikeout and the Phillies then sent Jimmy Rollins up to the plate. Jimmy had been charged with an error in the previous inning on a throw by Chase Utley to second that he couldn’t handle. I thought the error was on Utley with the throw itself, it was wide an had some english on it. Jimmy was down in the count with 2 strikes on him, when he delivered a deep infield single to second to keep the Phillies alive.

The announcers on TBS were already talking about a Game 5 that would have been tonight in Philly. Shane Victorino was next to bat, and he hit a bouncing ball towards second base and the Rockies got Jimmy Rollins out at second base but Victorino was safe at first. Chase Utley then moved into the batters box for the Phillies. This was so close to being a Game 5 at this point, there was no reason to believe the Phils wouldn’t have to be playing the Rockies tomorrow in Philly. I think this comeback qualifies for an ESPN, “Instant Classic”. Utley was down with 2 strikes by Houston Street who was the Rockies pitcher. Chase worked a walk out of Street and the Phillies were still breathing with runners on first and second with Ryan Howard up to bat.

Ryan Howard sent a deep fly ball to right and it dropped in for a hit. Shane Victorino had trouble touching third base on the way around and had to go back to touch it and almost collided with Utley who was in full gear but the Phillies scored both runners as Howard coasted into second with a double. So the Phillies tied the game 4-4 with 2 outs. Jason Werth then followed with his own hit to right and scoring on the play was Howard. The Rockies crowd was stunned and silent, as they watched this game unravel.

       Phillies NLDS Batting Average leaders

Chase Utley 6-14 .429
Ryan Howard 6-16 .375
Jason Werth 5-14 .357
Shane Victorino 6-17 .353

What a victory by the Phils in Game 4, and true instant classic here for Phillies fans, the Phils move on to face the Dodgers out in LA on Thursday night.
