Phillies will face the Rockies in Round 1

Que the Rocky music, it’s on! The Phillies will take on one of the best playing teams in baseball after the All Star Break in the Colorado Rockies in round one of the NLDS that starts Wednesday at Philadelphia’s Citizen Bank Park. The Phillies have scored the most runs in the National League up to last night’s game at 810, right behind them is guess who? The Colorado Rockies at 801. The Phillies and the Rockies are almost a tie on most of their offensive stats, total RBI’s so far: Phillies 779, Rockies 757, Team Batting Average:  Phillies .258, Rockies .262, SLG Percentage: Phillies .447, Rockies .443, so the series is a good matchup on paper. The Rockies are 21st in the MLB in salaries at just over $72 million for the team total. The Yankees by the way are #1 at $208 million as they try to buy a World Series victory.
If the Phillies are going to win this series they are going to have to control Troy Tulowitzki, he owns almost every leading stat of a Rockies player in offense. He leads them in HR, RBI, R, and OPS. The other player the Phillies will have to zone in on is Todd Helton. He leads the team in batting average. Tulowitzki is in just his 4th season for the Rockies and makes $1 million dollars this year for the Rockies. If I were him I would want to fire my agent. If he was on the Phillies he would make $5 million for sure. He’s been a name that has been associated with a winning Rockies ball club for some time now. He’s an unlikely guy to play shortstop for his height at 6’ 3” but he’s one of the better shortstops who is having a breakout year and almost matching numbers he put up in 2007 when the Rockies made it to the World Series. If fact this year Tulowitzki put up 32 HR so far and that is the most of his career in a single season.

The Phillies beat Jorge De La Rosa on April 11, 2009 by a score of 8-4 in Colorado. In that game, De La Rosa only pitched 4.2 innings and gave up 6 H, and 5 ER while throwing 99 pitches. The Phils whipped up on him again 7-0 in Philadelphia on 8/5, the Phils touched him up for 10 H, and 7 ER, in that ballgame. A lot of his 16 wins that came after June 1st were against teams that weren’t in the hunt for the playoffs.

On June 3rd the Rockies were 15.5 games back behind the Dodgers, they turned it around to almost take the division from the Dodgers but with a loss against LA last night, they can’t win the division. The Rockies accelerated the last 3 weeks of the season while the San Francisco Giants who were in the hunt for a playoff spot just ran out of gas and couldn’t keep the pace with the Rockies.

No official start time released yet for Wednesday’s Division playoff opener in Philadelphia, for those with tickets I would say just be there early because there will be a lot of entertainment early at the ballpark and you don’t want to miss that!
