Phils win to stay atop NL East by 6

The two games in Washington have been thrilling so far to say the least. Why do the Phillies have so much trouble with a team that has only 47 wins? Cliff Lee went out on the mound and got another win, he left the game after 7.0 innings, he did give up 10 hits on the night and 5 runs, 4 of which were earned. The Phillies end up winning 6-5 in the thriller in Washington. Werth hit HR number 33 and Pedro Feliz went deep for the Phils as well.

The biggest story on the night was Charlie Manuel not using Brad Lidge to close the game out. This was a move that needed to be made. Lidge may very well still be the closer on this team, but he needs a break and this was the right move at the right time by Manuel. Give Lidge another week off to rest, and I'm sure it does wonders for his confidence. Ryan Madson came into the game to get his 6th save of the year last night.

The Florida Marlins tore up the NY Mets last night to stay in the hunt for the NL East. The Phillies still have important games against those Marlins left this season. It will be interesting to see that unfold as the month of September rolls on and the end of the regular season as well when the Phillies close out the year against the Marlins. For now though, the Phillies win and stay an arm's length away from the Marlins as they close out the series in Washington tonight and come home to the weekend series with New York.
