Jamie Moyer working earlier in the season pic R.Baxter
It would appear that the baseball gods are smiling down on Jamie Moyer. Since he was moved to the bullpen, Jamie has been called on to pitch long relief for Pedro Martinez for the second time in a couple weeks. Friday night's game had a rain delay of about an hour and Pedro Martinez was still going to pitch the game for the Phils, but then another 55 minute or so delay brought Jamie into the game.
The Phillies still really haven't seen what they want to see in Pedro Martinez, that is more complete series of consecutive pitched games. Martinez did go 6.0 innings and gave up 6 hits and 4 ER and 5 SO on August 23rd for the Phils against the Mets. He gave up two home runs against his old team but earned the win 9-7. In that game, the Phillies came out and blasted 6 first inning runs. In Pedro's two wins, one came against the Mets, and the other was his first outing in a Phils uniform in Chicago, in that game the Phils won 12-5 and the Phils scored 8 runs in the 4th inning. Pedro's win in Chicago was his first as a Phillie, he went 5.0 innings, giving up 7 H, 3 ER, and had 5 strikeouts.
Twitter messege of the night:
Pedro since joining Phillies: 16 IP, 8ER, 14/3 K/BB, 2 W. Jamie since bullpen demotion: 10.1 IP, 1 ER, 10/0 K/BB, in line for 2 W. by Beerleaguer
Jamie gets his second win in relief, can he make it to 20 this year? Probably not but we'll see. Ryan Howard and Jason Werth carried the Phillies in August 2009 - who was the best? I'll work up the stats in a future post, but for tonight it was Ryan Howard doing it all when no one else seems to be able to muster up the offense.
