Opening Day only 1 day away for the Phillies

Your opening day pitcher: Brett Myers

Opening day now about 24 hours away and Brett Myers is no doubt chomping at the bit to get the ball and go out there and get the job done on the mound. His full name is Brett Allen Myers and he was born August 17, 1980 in Jacksonville, Florida. He has a career era of 4.34. He is projected to have 12 wins this year and pitch 180 innings. I think it will be closer to 15-17 wins with 199 innings pitched. His salary last year was a shade above $5 million.

Here's the competion:

The Washington Nationals

Not picked by many to be a power house by any leading sports services. They do have a brand new park in Washington DC though and a guy named Dmitri Young as the anchor of the team. The Nats actually open their season tonight and should end up as the prey of the Atlanta Braves.

Jayson Stark of ESPN is on the main page of ESPN today proclaiming that the Braves will win the division. I say that's preposterous and in a word: wrong. The Braves have an aging staff, true they have some good starters but I don't see the big turn around for them, they sacked Andrew Jones and I just don't share the opinion that the Braves are the team to beat in the National League. Stark and Pascarelli from ESPN will eat crow by July or August when the Braves fade away like they did last year.

Now back to the pesky Nationals, they could play the spoiler role this year. Meaning that teams that go in and count games as an automatic 'win' against this team could be surprised by the feisty play that they produce. Here's the starting lineups for Washington:

Center: Lastings Milledge: was supposed to be the next Mets phenom

Left : Elijah Dukes: Put up your Dukes!

Right: Austin Kearns: Scrappy reliable right fielder

Third : Ryan Zimmerman: Back at third for the Nats

SS : Christan Guzman: Good range

Second: Ronnie Belliard: Veteran Second baseman

First : Dmitiri Young: Deep power threat

Catcher: Paul LoDuca: Fiery catcher, ex Mets star

There you have them, they aren't the Yankees, but they will probably win 75 games this year!

Here comes the 2007 National League East Champs!

Yes this is art, done in the Phila/NJ area courtesy of About-Face-Painting.com

The Phils are in town once again for the start of the 126th season of Phillies Baseball and the signal that Spring is officially here! I'll be up scouting the team on Saturday and I'll have a lot to say about what I see in my blog here in the next few days.

The photo is courtesy of a local artist that specializes in body art, nice Phillies jersey! Or a closer examination of such reveals a lot more artistic talent then I will ever have! See and learn more at Cheryl's site:

We are going to have Cheryl on the show in the near future, stay tuned! (editors note: the model is not the owner of this business, but it shows that she is a happy customer by the looks of things! See her at the stadium if she would dare! :)

Under 10 days till "Play Ball"

The wait of winter is almost over, in fact it's already Spring on the calendar. The true meaning of spring doesn't start for me until the Phillies season gets under way in 9 days. All the waiting is almost over, the baseball pundits have spoken and now it all comes down to just a simple matter of playing 162 games!

I am just finishing up on my first official Fightin' Phils audio post for 2008. This year it will be great fun as usual, but throughout the year I will also be doing what is called, "Screencasting" to go along with the podcast. The two will integrate seamlessly and will be interesting to do for the viewers of the screencasts here on the blog as well as our podcast listeners. So check it out, leave me a comment, let me know if you like it!

The Major League Baseball picks show 2008

Here is our show for the 2008 MLB Baseball picks show, who we think will be the winners of both the National and American Leagues. Join Mike Berquist from "A Citizen's Blog" a great Phillies blog along with James 'Jimmy Dogg' Mulry and myself, Rich Baxter as we bring you our picks for the top contenders in baseball this upcoming season.

I had some major problems hearing the show on my headphones, due to some technical troubles, so I apologize for my miscues with my co-hosts not being able to hear the show properly at all. Despite this, I think this is one of our best shows of the year. We talked about the Phillies and what the early spring season is showing us. We all agree pitching could again be the thorn in the Phillies side.

We talk about the start of the baseball season, the official opening day is March 30th but the season actually kicks off five days earlier in Japan. Is this the proper way to kick off the baseball season? We chat about that and a whole lot more on show 80 of Philly Sports Talk Now - this post also going onto my Phillies Talk blog here!

I'll post our picks on our blog in the next week or so, but to keep this show exclusive, you'll have to listen to the show to hear them!
